The Ideal Series by Breyer: Honoring the Artistry of Orren Mixer
Breyer's Ideal Series pays homage to the stunning equine artwork of renowned artist Orren Mixer (1920-2008). Each hand-painted model in this collection is inspired by one of Mixer's famed "ideal" paintings of different horse breeds.
Born in Oklahoma in 1920, Orren Mixer is celebrated for his gorgeous Western scenes, livestock portraits, and depictions of horses. After working as a graphic artist and serving in the Navy, he returned home and established his art studio. Mixer rose to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, with his artwork gracing the covers of magazines like Western Horseman. Over the course of his career, seven major horse breed associations commissioned him to paint the "ideal" representative of their breed, and these images are still used today, cementing Mixer's legacy as a preeminent equine artist.
In 1991, the Palomino Horse Breeders of America commissioned Mixer to create a painting commemorating their 50th anniversary. The result was a stunning portrait of a proud palomino stallion with the breed's signature "gold coin" coat color, set against a lush pastoral backdrop. Mixer also famously featured palominos in several other paintings, including portraits of famous palominos like Cutter Bill, Diamonds Sparkle, and Shining Spark. In recognition of his work, Mixer was awarded the PHBA's President's Special Service Award.
Breyer, the maker of the world's finest model horses, has captured the essence of Mixer's artistry in their Ideal Series. Since 1950, Breyer has brought to life a wide range of horse breeds from around the world, including iconic equine heroes like Secretariat, Valegro, and Big Chex to Cash. The Traditional Series offers unparalleled realism and attention to detail, appreciated by children and adults alike. Each 1:9 scale model is meticulously hand-painted, ensuring that no two are exactly the same.
Breyer is proud to have a vibrant community of model horse fans, artists, and collectors, and hosts the annual BreyerFest – a three-day extravaganza for horse lovers and Breyer enthusiasts in Kentucky. Bringing home a Breyer model allows you to unleash your imagination and create entire equestrian worlds with realistic accessories like barns, fencing, tack, trailers, and even riders.
The Ideal Series represents Breyer's commitment to delivering high-quality, hand-crafted model horses that capture the essence of the real-life animals that inspired them. Each model is prepared and finished by hand, with around 20 artisans working on every individual piece to ensure exquisite detail and unparalleled craftsmanship.
